A comment on information privacy and the provision of
spiritual care to patients in Manitoba health care facilities under The Personal Health
Information Act (PHIA) has been released by Manitoba Ombudsman, Barry Tuckett.

Ombudsman places comments on Manitoba 's access and privacy legislation on
website – Jun 25, 2004
Manitoba Ombudsman Barry Tuckett announced today that comments in connection
with the review of The Freedom of Information Act and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and
The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) are being made available publicly on the office's
web site. To accommodate those who may not have reasonable access to the office's web site,
photocopies may be obtained by contacting the Ombudsman's office.

Ombudsman releases privacy impact assessment process to help ensure compliance
with Manitoba's information privacy laws – Oct 29,

In a Special Report to the Manitoba Legislature,
"Respecting Privacy: A Compliance Review Tool for Manitoba's Information Privacy
Laws", Ombudsman Barry Tuckett says that the requirements of Manitoba's information
privacy legislation need to be better known, more fully considered, and more systematically
applied than is now the case. To help this process along, the Ombudsman's Office is
introducing a privacy compliance self-assessment process that may be used by Manitoba public
bodies and personal health information trustees in their management of the personal and
personal health information entrusted to them.

Ombudsman finds that the collection, use and disclosure of passenger’s images
from taxicab cameras is in compliance with FIPPA – Apr 30,
2003
The Manitoba Ombudsman has concluded that the
collection, use, and disclosure of digital images from taxicab camera is authorized and
limited to the amount reasonably necessary under The Freedom of Information and Protection
of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

Manitoba Ombudsman releases 2001 Annual Report – Apr 3, 2003
The Manitoba Ombudsman released
his 2001 Annual Report under The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
(FIPPA) and The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA). He noted that the office was
handling a steadily growing workload with resultant backlogs. In 2001, 260 cases were opened
under the statutes, a 16% increase over the previous year. Complaints have increased 270%
since 1997.

Ombudsman
releases 2001 Annual Report – Mar 17, 2003
The Manitoba Ombudsman released his 2001 Annual Report noting that the
office worked on 945 complaints in 2001, which included 719 new cases. In addition, the
office fielded over 3100 enquiries in-person and by telephone.

Manitoba Ombudsman jurisdiction expands January 1, 2003 to include The City of
Winnipeg under The Ombudsman Act – Jan 2,
2003
Effective January 1, 2003, the Manitoba Ombudsman
will have jurisdiction to receive and investigate complaints against the City of
Winnipeg.

Ombudsman will review use of security cameras in taxis – Aug 2, 2002
As a result of issues raised to
the Ombudsman’s Office, the Manitoba Ombudsman will review the use of security cameras in
taxicabs to ensure that their use, while protecting the safety of cab drivers, does not
contravene personal information privacy protection requirements under The Freedom of
Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
